Label vs LeafAward claims
"Award-winning"? We could confirm 43% of the claims we could check
We hold 21,141 published cup results going back to 1988. So we checked 7,627 "award-winning" claims attached to strains against what the organisers actually published. More than half can't be checked at all, and that's before we get to the trophies that turned out to be hand-me-downs.
In this story
Every strain is a winner#
"Cannabis Cup winner." "Award-winning genetics." "Champion strain." Read enough seed listings and it starts to feel like every strain has a trophy, like a school sports day where every kid gets a medal. Cups are real, and winning one means something. So does the word, which is exactly why it gets borrowed.
CannaLib collects award claims from seed banks, breeders, catalogues and strain sites, and it collects the results the cups themselves published: 21,141 placings from cups held between 1988 and 2026. That lets us do something simple that nobody seems to do at scale. Take a claim, find the cup and the year it names, and look for the strain in the results. It's a bouncer checking the guest list, just with 7,627 guests.
Most claims can't be checked#
The first surprise came before any checking. Of 7,627 award claims, 4,086 (54%) are too vague to verify. It's the "I won a race once" problem: no race, no year, no town. Some name no cup at all. Some say "Cannabis Cup" with no year or city, when High Times alone ran several cups a year in different cities. Others name a cup whose results were never published anywhere we could find.
From 7,627 claims to 797 we can check properly
Each step removes claims that can't be checked against published results. The last bar is the set used for the verdicts below.
Data table
| Step | Claims | Removed |
|---|---|---|
| All award claims | 7,627 | |
| Name a cup | 6,973 | 654 name none |
| Cup and event pinned down | 5,075 | 1,898 too vague (no year, no city) |
| Cup results researched | 3,541 | 1,534 cup or edition never researched |
| Year stated, full results held | 797 | set used for the verdicts |
To be fair to sellers, we then kept only the cleanest cases: claims that name a specific cup, state a year, and point at a cup edition whose full results we hold. That leaves 797 claims, about one in ten of the 7,627, so the percentages below describe the cleanest slice, not every claim. Here's what happened to them.
What we found, cup by cup

| Spannabis | 49 | 50 | 9 | 0 | 108 |
| Emerald Cup | 16 | 55 | 7 | 27 | 105 |
| IC420 Growers Cup | 21 | 12 | 2 | 0 | 35 |

"Not found" doesn't mean "made up"#
Before anyone reads the grey bars as lies, here's an example. Plenty of listings say Gorilla Glue #4 won the 2014 Michigan Cannabis Cup. It did. But the organiser's results list the entry as plain "Gorilla Glue", so a strict name match misses it, like searching the guest list for Robert when he signed in as Bob. Cups list entries under team names, phenotype names and nicknames. Some claims refer to a cut a breeder entered under another name.
So "not found" means exactly that: the strain doesn't appear under that name in that cup's results. Some of those will be wins listed under another name. Some will be claims with nothing behind them. We're working through them one by one, and each strain card shows which is which.
A trophy is a fact about one plant, one cup, one year. On a seed listing it often becomes a fact about a name.
The trophy that travels#
The two smaller buckets are the most revealing. In 57 claims the strain did place at that cup, just not in the year the listing says. And 28 claims borrow a win that belongs to a parent.
The clearest case: Chili Verde took first place for Personal Sungrown at the 2018 Emerald Cup. The same paragraph about that win turns up on the listings of several different strains bred from it. Each one now reads as "2018 Emerald Cup". The win is real. It just belongs to the parent, like the kids wearing a medal their mum earned.
Cup by cup, the pattern differs. At IC420 and the Karma Cup most dated claims check out. At the Emerald Cup only 16 of 105 do, and a quarter of its claims point at a parent's trophy.
Why it matters#
An award is one of the few pieces of evidence in cannabis that a panel of judges actually looked at the plant. That's worth something, so it's worth getting right. The fix is simple: say which cup, which year, which category, and which plant won. Then anyone can check, and the winners get to flex properly.
Trophy check: send us a claim#
Seen an "award-winning" strain on a pack, a menu or a listing? Post the claim with #TrophyCheck and tag CannaLib. Were you at the cup? Tell us what really won. Organisers' lists get lost, and people who were there are how we fill the gaps.
Have old cup programmes, results sheets or magazine pages? Photos of them help us restore results that were never published online.
Method and sources#
- CannaLib competition results: 21,141 placings from cup editions held 1988–2026, each linked to the organiser's page, an archived copy or the magazine that printed it. Editions are marked found, complete, partial or not found.
- Award claims: 7,627 claims attached to strains in CannaLib, from seed banks, breeders, catalogues and strain sites, each keeping the text it came from.
- Verdicts (run 30 Sep 2026): confirmed (strain in that cup's results that year), not found (edition researched, strain absent under that name), year mismatch (strain placed at that cup in another year), parent won (a stated parent holds the result). The 797-claim set excludes claims with no year, generic "Cannabis Cup" claims, cups that share a name with another event, and editions held only in part.
- Examples checked against the stored results: Gorilla Glue, High Times Cannabis Cup Michigan 2014, Best Hybrid, 1st; Chili Verde, The Emerald Cup 2018, Personal Sungrown, 1st.
