Don't breed blind: check the family tree before you cross

Two "unrelated" mothers that share a grandparent can cost you four months of canopy. Here's how to check the tree first, with every competing breeder claim and its source one click away.

Picture this. You spend four months running two "totally unrelated" cultivars through veg and flower, you make the cross, and then somebody on a forum says, "Bro... those share a grandfather."

Four months of canopy space, gone. You just made your cousin's kid.

That is the breeder's version of a nightmare, and it happens constantly, because cannabis pedigrees were never written down properly. For decades they lived on handwritten index cards, in the memory of one guy with a basement, and in forum threads that later vanished when somebody forgot to renew a domain. Then legalization arrived, and marketing took over: phenotypes got renamed for clout, bagseed accidents got rebranded as "proprietary crosses", and the real history got buried under hype.

cannalib.org is a free, public family-tree library built to dig that history back out. Think of it as the world's most paranoid grandma, the one who remembers who married whom at every wedding since 1970 and writes down who told her so.

The Numbers (Yes, There Are Receipts)

As of this writing, CannaLib holds:

  • 143,611 named strains, with 92,344 of them in the main catalogue (meaning they carry real listings, lineage, grow or effect data, not just a name).
  • 118,039 parent-to-child links, and a lineage map covering 57,015 strains.
  • 7,358,743 evidence-backed data points, each tied to a source.
  • 1,194 sources and 211 seed banks, with 6,124 breeders named on real strains.
  • 1,276,466 lab test results, and 1,017 strains with a real DNA sample behind them.

Quick honesty note: these numbers are named strains, not 143,611 distinct genotypes. Plenty of names are the same plant wearing different hats. (Which is exactly the problem we're here to talk about.)

The Power of Not Picking a Winner

Ask three old-school growers where Chemdog, OG Kush, or Bubba Kush came from, and you will get three fiercely defended stories, two of which will end with "and that's the real one, trust me."

Most databases solve this by quietly crowning one story and deleting the rest. CannaLib doesn't. When sources disagree, it shows every claim side by side, with the seed bank, catalog, or archive that made it. It does the same for numbers: across 37,014 strains, sources disagree on THC, and CannaLib shows the disagreement instead of averaging it into a made-up "22%".

Under the hood it runs on a simple rule set: don't invent, don't blend, don't merge, don't shred. If nobody recorded the flowering time, the field stays blank. A blank is more useful to a breeder than a confident guess.

Find the Roots Before You Plant the Seeds

Want hybrid vigor or a disease-resistance trait? Go back to the source. CannaLib flags founder strains (cultivars with no recorded parents) and lands you on landraces with a documented place of origin, so you can follow a modern dessert polyhybrid back through the generations like scrolling up a very long group chat.

Common lore (which you can check against the claims on each page) says Skunk #1 pulls from Afghani, Acapulco Gold, and Colombian Gold, and that Original Haze mixes Colombian, Mexican, Thai, and South Indian lines. Search the name, open the page, and see what the actual sources say rather than what the seed-pack art implies.

Bonus: A Built-In BS Detector for Cup Wins

Every seed bank says "multiple Cannabis Cup winner". Does the cup agree? CannaLib checked 4,826 seed-bank award claims against 21,141 results from 264 competitions in 61 countries (1988 to 2026). Result: 1,599 confirmed, 1,070 flatly not in the results, 167 with the wrong year, 41 where a parent actually won, and a big pile of "can't pin it to a single event" that stays open instead of getting a guess. Handy when you're deciding whether to pay breeder prices for a trophy that may only exist in a catalog.

Your Move

Before the next cross, spend two minutes on the tree. Search the mother, check her parents, see who disagrees, and look for a shared grandparent.

Know a pedigree that's wrong, or a catalog CannaLib is missing? Tell us. A library this size only gets better when the people who actually remember the old days chip in.

Open a parent in the sky map and check its recorded links before you cross. Everything above is checkable in the same CannaLib tools we used.
