Lineage Under the Limelight

A series on strains named by movies, TV and cartoons. Each episode puts the story everyone repeats next to what the record and CannaLib's lab and DNA data actually show. Pineapple Express is episode one; here are the next seven, researched and checked. Popcorn optional.

The premise#

When a strain gets a famous name, the name starts working harder than the plant. It's the intern who gets promoted to CEO while the real founder's lost in the car park. Breeders rush to fill it, origin stories multiply, and the original plant gets lost or renamed. Every episode answers three questions in the same order:

  1. Word on the street: the story everyone tells.
  2. What the record says: interviews, cup results, court papers, dated sources.
  3. What the plant says: CannaLib's lab tests, terpene profiles, family-tree evidence and public DNA.

Each episode ends with the same "name vs plant" scorecard used in the Pineapple Express piece, and a reader prompt under one series tag: #LineageUnderTheLimelight.

Three numbers turn up in every episode, so here's the cheat sheet. Kinship is a family-resemblance meter: 0 means total strangers, about 0.25 means parent and child, and about 0.5 means the same plant twice (anything above 0.354 counts as "same plant"). A median is the middle result: line up every lab test from weakest to strongest and it's the one in the centre. The typical range is the spread of the middle 80% of tests, so one freak jar doesn't skew the picture.

Shorts and sidebars#

Smaller finds that will turn up as social posts, sidebars or a round-up episode.

Three Mr. Nices, one gigA memoir (Mr Nice, 1996), a film (Half Baked, January 1998) and a Sensi Seeds strain released in 1999 all share a nickname. The dates put the memoir first, and Sensi says its strain was named after the author. We found no dated source showing the film named the strain, so we won't pick a winner.
Heisenberg, twice overWalter White took his alias from the physicist Werner Heisenberg, and Heisenberg Kush's breeder says the strain is named for the same physicist, not the show. We found no strain named in any episode of Breaking Bad, so "the Breaking Bad strain" is a fan label, not a fact. Our DNA check on it is pending the next release.
An offer you can't refuseGodfather OG is claimed at 30–34% THC. 75 lab tests put its median at 18.4%, so the median claim sits 11.6 points higher.
Second breakfast, wrong leafLongbottom Leaf, Old Toby and Southern Star are Tolkien's pipe-weed, and Tolkien meant tobacco [Tolkien Gateway]. Twelve breeders sell a cannabis Longbottom Leaf anyway.
"Government-grown"American Beauty's G-13 line revived the myth of a strain smuggled out of a US government farm [Flavorwire]. A future episode could test the story.

Grape ApeA cartoon gorilla, a purple strain, and in the DNA another name for the Grand Daddy Purple plant. More in episode 3.
